Where in the world: Spain is a Southern European country on the Iberian Peninsula, between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, with France and Andorra to the northeast and Portugal to the west. Its capital is Madrid, and it also includes the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean and the Canary Islands in the Atlantic.
People: about 49.1 million inhabitants (INE, January 2025). Spain does not record race or ethnicity in its statistics; about 19% of residents were born abroad (9.5 million), led by Moroccans, Colombians, Venezuelans and Romanians. The country is home to distinct peoples — Castilians, Catalans, Basques and Galicians — and a centuries-old Roma community of about 1.3%.
Language: Spanish (Castilian) is the official language nationwide. Catalan, Galician and Basque are co-official in their regions.
Religion: culturally Catholic and deeply secular. In the April 2025 CIS survey, 55.4% self-identified as Catholic (36.6% non-practicing, 18.8% practicing), 3.6% as other faiths, and 39% as non-believers — atheists 15.8%, indifferent 12.0%, agnostics 11.2%.
Economy: one of the world's top tourist destinations, with strong services, agriculture and automotive industries. GDP is about $1.73 trillion (2024), GDP per capita about $35,327 (2024). Its currency is the euro.
Safety in context: Spain is one of the safest countries in Europe. Its homicide rate was about 0.7 per 100,000 people in 2024 — among the lowest in Europe. Tourist areas like Madrid, Barcelona, Seville and the islands are generally visited with normal precautions.
Must-see places: Madrid, Barcelona and the Sagrada Familia, the Alhambra in Granada, Seville, Santiago de Compostela, Toledo, San Sebastián, and Ibiza.
