GET TO KNOW SWITZERLAND — wear your heritage, and learn it too.

Where in the world: Switzerland is a landlocked Central European country in the heart of the Alps, bordering Germany, France, Italy, Austria and Liechtenstein. Its seat of government is Bern, and its cities include Zurich, Geneva and Basel — with the Alps covering about 60% of its land.

People: about 9.0 million inhabitants (passed 9 million in 2024). Switzerland's Federal Statistical Office does not collect data on race or ethnicity; it counts nationality: in 2023, 73.0% of residents were Swiss and 27.0% were foreign nationals, and about 40% of the population has a migrant background. The largest foreign groups are Italian (about 342,400), German (about 329,000), Portuguese (about 257,300) and French (about 171,100). 2020 estimates put Swiss nationals at 69.2%, with German 4.2%, Italian 3.2%, Portuguese 2.5%, French 2.1%, Kosovan 1.1% and Turkish 1%.

Language: Switzerland has four national languages: German (main language for about 62.3%), French (about 22.8%), Italian (about 8.0%) and Romansh (about 0.5%). English is widely spoken, especially in business.

Religion: no single faith holds a majority. 2024 national survey (age 15+): unaffiliated 36.8% — the largest group — Catholic 30.0%, Protestant 18.7%, other Christians 6.0%, Muslim 6.0%, Hindu 0.6%, Buddhist 0.5%, Jewish 0.2%.

Economy: one of the world's richest countries per person, built on banking, pharmaceuticals, watches, precision machinery and tourism. GDP is about $937.4 billion (2024), GDP per capita about $104,340 (2024). Its currency is the Swiss franc.

Safety in context: Switzerland is among the safest countries in Europe. Its homicide rate was 0.60 per 100,000 people in 2023 (World Bank/UNODC) — among the lowest in the world — and its cities and mountain towns are generally visited with normal precautions.

Must-see places: Zurich, Geneva, Bern, Lucerne, the Matterhorn and Zermatt, the Jungfrau region, Interlaken, Lake Geneva and Château de Chillon.
