Where in the world: Panama is a Latin American country in Central America, on the narrow isthmus that joins North and South America. It borders Costa Rica to the west and Colombia to the east, with the Caribbean Sea to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the south. It is home to the Panama Canal, the waterway that links the Atlantic and the Pacific.

Seven Indigenous peoples live in Panama: Ngäbe, Buglé, Guna, Emberá, Wounaan, Bri Bri and Naso Tjërdi.

Language: Spanish is the official language. Indigenous languages such as Ngäbere and Guna are also spoken, along with English-based Creole in Afro-Caribbean communities.

Economy: a service-driven, dollarized economy — Panama has used the US dollar since 1904. Services make up about 69% of GDP, industry 26% and agriculture 3%. The Canal, logistics, banking and the Colón Free Zone are its engines. GDP per capita is around $36,400 (PPP, 2024).

Safety in context: Panama's homicide rate was 12.9 per 100,000 people in 2024 — below the Latin American median — with most cases concentrated in parts of Panama City and Colón provinces. Tourist areas like Casco Antiguo, the Canal, Bocas del Toro and San Blas are generally visited with normal precautions.

Must-see places: the Panama Canal and Miraflores Locks, Casco Antiguo (UNESCO World Heritage), Panamá Viejo, the Amador Causeway, the Biomuseo, the San Blas Islands (Guna Yala), Bocas del Toro and the highland town of Boquete.
