Where in the world: Mexico is a North American country between the United States to the north and Guatemala and Belize to the south, with the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea to the east. Its capital is Mexico City, one of the largest cities on earth, and it is the world's largest Spanish-speaking country.
People: about 130.9 million inhabitants (World Bank, 2024). Mexico's census does not ask race for most of the population; the majority identify as mestizo — mixed Indigenous and European ancestry, about three-fifths of the population (Encyclopædia Britannica). In the 2020 census, 19.4% self-identified as Indigenous (23.2 million people, from 68 Indigenous peoples, including the Nahua, Maya, Mixtec and Zapotec), and 2.0% self-identified as Afro-Mexican (2.6 million, first counted in 2020).
Language: Spanish is the most widely spoken language. Mexico also recognizes 68 Indigenous languages, the most spoken being Nahuatl.
Religion: mostly Catholic, with a growing Protestant and unaffiliated share. In the 2020 census (INEGI), 77.7% identified as Catholic, 11.2% as Protestant or Evangelical, 8.1% as having no religion, 2.5% as believers without a religious affiliation, and 0.2% as other religions.
Economy: Latin America's second-largest economy, built on manufacturing, oil, tourism and remittances from Mexicans abroad. GDP is about $1.9 trillion (2024), GDP per capita about $14,186 (2024). Its currency is the Mexican peso.
Safety in context: Mexico's homicide rate was about 26 per 100,000 people in 2024 (INEGI) — high by world standards, but falling: it peaked near 29 in 2018 and dropped further in 2025. Rates vary enormously by state and city; the main tourist areas are generally visited with normal precautions.
Must-see places: Mexico City and Teotihuacan, Chichén Itzá, Oaxaca, Guadalajara, Cancún and the Riviera Maya, Tulum, and the Copper Canyon.
